Azerbaijan (former Soviet Union) has only four living horse breeds and one extinct horse breed.
The climate of Azerbaijan is rather unique as the country is home to nine of the eleven climactic zones found on the planet. This is also a mountainous country and one that breeds tough little mountain horses.
Most of the animals from Azerbaijan have Arabian roots. However, the unique climate and varied terrain of Azerbaijan has evolved the Arabian into an animal more suited to the geography.
Most horse people can recognize Arabian characteristics, that dished profile, high set tail and regal bearing is unmistakable. The breeds of this intensely varied place display the Arabian characteristics in varying degrees, based on how old (or rare) the breed is.
